The culture will be celebrating a milestone in just under three years as the biggest genre of music, hip-hop, enters its 50th year of history. What many have come to recognize as the birth of hip-hop, DJ Kool Herc’s summertime South Bronx block party will now be documented in a new series for Showtime.
As hip-hop continues to break barriers, set new records, and hold the highest and most influential spots on Billboard and the culture, Nas’s Mass Appeal and Sacha Jenkins have teamed up to deliver Hip Hop 50, which will explore the rich history of the movement. The New York native and famed director have partnered for a series that will focus on different eras of hip-hop through various documentaries. There’s a ton of elements planned for the series including a look at women in the culture, focusing on “Push It”, a series that will explore the impact of “Video Music Box”, Cypress Hill, as well as many podcasts and unscripted shows.
