While MTV’s Video Music Awards have undoubtedly changed throughout the years, last night’s televised show was a tribute to the one genre that has permeated throughout the culture and all of the music industry. Honoring the Garden State, New Jersey, this year’s VMAs brought out the classic hip hop age with homegrown talent that included Queen Latifah, Redman, Wyclef Jean, Naughty By Nature and more.

Being that hip-hop originated out on the East, it was only right to have some off the pioneers that pushed the early 90s sound to the forefront. The show’s finale brought out the classic hits “O.P.P.”, “Hip Hop Hooray”, “Gone Till November” Fetty Wap’s “Trap Queen”, and of course Queen Latifah’s “U.N.I.T.Y.”.

Not only did the VMAs put some of our favorite classic rappers at the forefront, the legendary Missy Elliott received the prestigious Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award for her iconic visuals.

Elliott pulled out all the stops including her infamous black bubble suit, that’s featured in her debut “The Rain” and even surprised fans with dancer Alyson Stoner who was featured in a lot of Missy’s standout videos.
